About Us: MEER.org is a pioneering non-profit organization at the forefront of climate adaptation and mitigation research. Our mission is to develop and implement cutting-edge technologies to reduce global temperatuves and improve resilience to heat stress. We deploy innovative surface reflectors and mirror canopies to reduce urban heat, conserve water, and support agriculture. As part of our expanding global efforts, we are looking for a volunteer civil engineer to advise remotely on the installation of support structures for reflective mirror canopies in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
By joining MEER, you will be working alongside Dr. Ye Tao, a leader in the field of climate engineering and formerly a fellow of the Rowland Institute at Harvard University. This is a unique opportunity to be on the leading edge of climate adaptation and mitigation research, contributing to high-impact projects that blend practical solutions with scientific innovation.
Role Overview: We are seeking a Civil Engineer to volunteer their expertise in advising on the design and installation of support structures for our reflective mirror canopy projects. These structures will range from small-scale courtyard installations to larger projects where the canopies will be deployed over housing areas as part of a hectare-scale climate experiment. You will be expected to contribute between 5-10 hours per week, with flexibility to adjust the hours based on your availability and project needs. Your guidance will be key in ensuring the structural integrity and long-term success of these groundbreaking installations.
Job Responsibilities
* Provide expert advice on the structural design and installation of support systems for reflective mirror canopies.
* Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team, including Dr. Ye Tao, to integrate engineering solutions into climate adaptation strategies.
* Assist local teams in deulgning durable, environmentally friendly support structures for both small-scale and large-scale projects.
* Ensure all installations meet local safety and engineering standards while optimizing for long-term durability in challenging environmental conditions.
* Offer remote troubleshooting and ongoing engineering support throughout the project lifecycle.
Skills and qualifications
Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Civil Engineering.
* Proven experience in structural design, particularly for large-scale or innovative projects.
* A passion for climate adaptation and a desire to work on the cutting edge of climate engineering research.
* Ability to provide practical, clear advice to remote teams working in developing region.
* Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset, ready to work with experts li Dr. Ye Tao and a dynamic global team.
