Dr. Ye Tao on Electrify Now
"Learn how surface-based solar reflectors could provide localized cooling benefits and stabilize Earth's temperatures to prevent overheating.
Mirrors for Earth's Energy Rebalancing - MEER - is a non profit research and development organization designing and deploying surface-based mirror arrays and solar reflectors. These arrays provide localized cooling advantages and if deployed in significant quantities could help to reduce the amount of heat that is absorbed by the Earth's surface to avoid catastrophic effects of climate change while efforts to reduce persistent carbon accumulations in the atmosphere are ongoing.
Join us for a conversation with Dr. Ye Tao, founder of MEER. He will explain why surface-based reflectors could be an efficient strategy to deal with the Earth's energy imbalance and describe the projects that MEER is piloting to study the practicality of deployment, methods for manufacturing the reflectors, and the local cooling advantages that these devices can deliver.
We will answer the following questions and more:
-What do we mean by the Earth's energy balance?
-Why is it important to address the problem of heat accumulation in addition to carbon emissions reduction?
-How do mirrored reflectors reduce Earth's surface temperatures?
-Where and how are these devices best deployed?
-Why do they have potential to help with agricultural processes as well as urban cooling?
-How many of these mirrors do we need to provide a benefit locally and globally?
-What are the mirrors made of and how could we manufacture enough of them?
-How does the cost of this solution compare with other solutions being considered?
-What are the risks and benefits of this solution compared to other potential solutions?"
